Google Local Services Ads, explained without the jargon
Google Local Services Ads are the ads that appear above regular search results with a phone number, a star rating, and a badge, built specifically for local service businesses. According to Google's own help center (support.google.com, read September 2026), you pay only when a potential customer contacts you through the ad, not for impressions or clicks.

What contractors search for, and what Google charges per click.
| Search term | US searches per month | Google Ads cost per click |
|---|---|---|
| google local services ads | 33,100 | $7.93 |
Source: DataForSEO keyword data, United States, measured September 2026. 33,100 monthly US searches for the exact phrase 'google local services ads' is the largest single keyword in any cluster we measured across this site (DataForSEO, September 2026). Our reading, not a measured fact: the low $7.93 cost per click suggests much of that volume is business owners researching or managing an account rather than homeowners shopping for a contractor.
What Google Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads are a separate ad product from regular Google Ads, built only for local service categories such as home services, and they appear at the very top of search results, above the regular text ads. Google's own help center describes potential customers being able to click or tap the ad to call the business, send a message request, or book directly (support.google.com/localservices, read September 2026).
The ad itself shows your business name, star rating, service area, and hours, along with a badge. It is designed to look and feel different from a standard text ad, closer to a business listing than a headline and description you write yourself.
Local Services Ads run through their own management dashboard, separate from the regular Google Ads interface, where a business handles lead communication, tracks performance, manages its budget, and reviews bookings (support.google.com/localservices/answer/6224841, read September 2026).
How Local Services Ads charge you
The billing model is different from regular Google Ads. Google's help center states plainly that you pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer, not for impressions or clicks (support.google.com/localservices/answer/6224841, read September 2026). That is a pay-per-lead structure rather than the pay-per-click structure that runs the rest of Google Ads.
You set your own budget and can adjust it at any time based on how many leads you want to receive, according to the same Google help documentation. We have not sourced Google's specific price per lead for any trade or market on its own pages, so anything you are quoted should come directly from Google or your own account, not from this page.
Google's help center also states that responsiveness affects your ad ranking: businesses that regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages may see their ad shown less often (support.google.com/localservices/answer/6224841, read September 2026). That detail matters for any owner comparing this to a model where a missed call has no direct cost, because on Local Services Ads a pattern of missed calls can quietly reduce how much traffic you get at all.
The Google Verified badge and what screening requires
Local Services Ads used to carry two separate badges, Google Guaranteed and Google Screened. Google's help center confirms it has simplified this into a single Google Verified badge, and has discontinued the Money Back Guarantee that used to be tied to the Google Guarantee badge (support.google.com/localservices/answer/16498018, read September 2026). If you see either of the older badge names referenced elsewhere, treat the current, unified name as the accurate one.
To carry the badge at all, Google requires every advertiser to complete a screening and verification process before ads run, and the specific checks vary by category and location. Google's own documentation lists business checks, owner checks, and in some trades service-professional checks, along with state or province-level business and owner licenses where applicable, and insurance verification such as general liability coverage (support.google.com/localservices/answer/12174778, read September 2026).
Google also requires a public, verified Google Business Profile before you can advertise, and states that the overall screening process takes an average of three to four weeks to complete once documents are submitted (support.google.com/localservices/answer/12174778, read September 2026). That timeline is worth planning around if you are weighing Local Services Ads against a faster-to-launch option.
How Local Services Ads relate to regular Google Ads, and to PayOnJobs
Local Services Ads and regular Google Ads are both Google products, but they are built, billed, and managed separately. Regular Google Ads (the text ads and campaigns most agencies build) charge per click regardless of whether that click becomes a call, and they run through Google's standard Ads Manager. Local Services Ads charge only on a lead and run through their own dashboard, as described above.
Some contractors run both at once: Local Services Ads for the top-of-page lead placement, and regular Google Ads for broader keyword coverage Local Services Ads does not reach, since Local Services Ads is limited to eligible categories and requires the screening process described above. Whether that combination makes sense depends on your budget and your category's eligibility, which you would confirm directly with Google.
PayOnJobs does not run Local Services Ads on a partner's behalf. We build and manage a partner's own Google Ads account, funded by the partner directly at a $1,500 per month minimum with no markup from us, and we staff an AI receptionist so every call is answered regardless of which Google product brought it in. A partner considering Local Services Ads is welcome to run it alongside a PayOnJobs Google Ads account; the two are not exclusive of each other, they are simply managed and billed differently.
Questions to answer before you sign up for Local Services Ads
Ask Google directly, through your account rep or the sign-up flow, what the current lead price looks like for your trade and area, since that number is not published on the general help pages and changes by category and market. Ask exactly which screening documents your specific category requires, since the list Google publishes varies (support.google.com/localservices/answer/12174778, read September 2026), and budget three to four weeks for that process to clear.
If you already have a Google Business Profile and reviews, ask how those factor into your ad ranking once you are live, since Google's documentation ties responsiveness and reputation signals directly to how often your ad is shown (support.google.com/localservices/answer/6224841, read September 2026).

The terms used on this page.
- Google Verified badge
- The current, single verification badge shown on Local Services Ads, which replaced the older Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges (Google's help center, September 2026).
- Pay-per-lead
- A billing model where you are charged when a customer contacts you, not for every impression or click, which is how Google bills Local Services Ads.
- Cost per click (CPC)
- What an advertiser pays Google for a single click on a regular text ad; Local Services Ads instead bills per lead, not per click.
- Google Business Profile
- The free listing in Google Maps and search; Google requires a verified one before a business can run Local Services Ads.
- Screening and verification
- Google's review process for Local Services advertisers, which can include background checks, license checks, and insurance verification depending on category.
- Ad ranking
- How often and how high your ad appears; Google states that response speed and other signals affect this for Local Services Ads.
When PayOnJobs is not the right fit.
Local Services Ads only exist for eligible categories and require passing Google's screening process, which Google's own documentation says takes about three to four weeks. If you need to start generating calls sooner than that, or your trade is not eligible where you operate, Local Services Ads simply is not available to you yet, regardless of budget.
PayOnJobs is a different kind of arrangement entirely: we do not sell you access to Google's lead product, we build and manage your own Google Ads account and answer your calls, for 17 percent of paid jobs and a $1,500 per month ad minimum you fund directly. If what you actually want is specifically the Google Verified badge and Local Services placement, that has to be set up with Google directly; we can run alongside it, but we cannot replace it.
Straight answers.
What are Google Local Services Ads?
+
They are ads for local service businesses that appear above regular search results with a star rating, hours, and a badge. Google's help center states you pay only when a potential customer contacts you through the ad, not for clicks or impressions, which makes the billing model different from standard Google Ads.
How much do Google Local Services Ads cost?
+
Google bills per lead, and sets your weekly budget based on how many leads you want. We have not sourced an exact per-lead price from Google's own pages, since it varies by trade and market; ask Google directly for current pricing in your category and area before budgeting.
What is the Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge?
+
These were the two badge names Local Services Ads used to display. Google's help center confirms both were merged into a single Google Verified badge, and the Money Back Guarantee tied to the old Google Guaranteed badge has been discontinued (support.google.com, September 2026).
What screening do I need to get Local Services Ads?
+
Google's documentation lists business checks, owner checks, service-professional checks for some trades, state or province licenses where applicable, and insurance verification, plus a verified Google Business Profile. The exact list depends on your category and location, and the full process takes about three to four weeks on average.
Are Google Local Services Ads different from regular Google Ads?
+
Yes. Regular Google Ads charge per click and run through the standard Ads Manager. Local Services Ads charge per lead, require Google's screening and verification process before you can run any ads, and run through their own separate management dashboard, according to Google's own help documentation.
Can I use Local Services Ads and a marketing partner like PayOnJobs together?
+
Yes, they are not the same product. PayOnJobs builds and manages a Google Ads account in your name and answers your calls; Local Services Ads is a separate Google product you would set up directly with Google. Nothing about running one prevents running the other.
How long does it take to get approved for Local Services Ads?
+
Google's help center states the screening and verification process takes about three to four weeks on average once documents are submitted. Approval time can vary by category and location, and by how quickly your license, insurance, and background check documents clear Google's review.

The bottom line
Google Local Services Ads are a real, Google-run pay-per-lead product with a genuine screening requirement behind the Google Verified badge; they are not a scam and not the same thing as a marketing agency. They also are not free or instant, and Google does not publish per-lead pricing on its general help pages, so get a current quote from Google directly.
